SIT means Special Investigation Team. It is an independent investigative agency that is tasked with investigating specific instances.

"The Special Investigation Teams or SIT are special teams comprised consisting of police officers and Indian law enforcement agencies, comprised of people who have been trained to conduct investigations into serious criminal cases.

The SIT was established following the realization that the current agencies weren't believed to be competent enough to conduct an adequate investigation into the issue.

Do you know why an investigation team is specially commissioned to be a part of or is called upon when the organization in question isn't able conduct a thorough investigation into the facts or circumstances, or in the event that a case is targeted at high-profile people that could affect the investigation of the agency currently in charge.

There is no law in the constitution that defines the kinds of investigations that can be assigned to the investigative teams.

If an issue is brought to the tribunal and the tribunal is aware that the present agencies aren't moving towards the correct direction because of different factors, like corruption, bias, a lack of resources , or ted-tape... The court will designate an investigation team to look into the issue and provide the court with an analysis.

Eg. SIT for Black funds in the context of RTI Act by Supreme Court.
